Christmas Valley Sand Dunes is located 30 miles away from this property. The sand dunes include 11,000 acres of dunes for off-highway vehicle use. The area consists of medium-sized dunes and sand bowls. The dunes are made mostly of ash and pumice that blew into the region 7,000 years ago when Mt. Mazama erupted forming Crater Lake. If you are an ATV enthusiast, this is an extremely fun area to ride!
The Crack in the Ground - Just about 35 minutes by car is the Crack In The Ground, an ancient volcanic fissure with a length of over 2 miles long. It is up to 70 feet deep. Usually, fissures like the Crack In The Ground fissure are filled with soil and rock because of erosion. But this fissure is in an arid region, so the very little filling has occurred. Its current state is almost the same as it was when it was formed thousands of years ago. Explore the 2-mile trail along the fissure's bottom for an exciting and unique hike. Temperatures on this hike can be 20 degrees cooler than on the surface of the fissure.
Fort Rock State Park is about an hour away where you can see remnants of a volcano that once rose from the valley floor. It towers 325 feet above the ground and is about half a mile wide. This looks like a large circular fort coming out of the ground. The age estimate for this formation is between 50,000 and 100,000 years! As you walk around inside of this monument, you walk on the same ground as early American Indians who used a canoe to access what used to be an island. The oldest ever discovered sandals have been found in this cave, dating back around 9,000-13,000 years. Take your family on guided tours of Fort Rock which are available with the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department.
