Recreational Land for Sale in Smyrna, South Carolina
York County Smyrna, SC 29743
Gold Mine Tract is a beautiful, forested property located in a quiet spot in the rural rolling hills of western York County. It lies just west of the small town of Smyrna and south of Legion Road.
Broad upland ridges are covered with young, planted pines. Mixed mature hardwoods stand on slopes between the ridges. Two small branches flow through the land, and the upper end of Guyonmoore Creek runs along the back property line. The immediate neighborhood is mostly wooded tracts. Houses are widely scattered in the area.
Martins Goldmine Road is a small, paved road with no outlet. It serves as the western boundary of the land, with a little more than 1,000 feet of frontage. A small cable gate stands near the middle of the road frontage where a woods road enters the tract. Topography along the road is very gentle and access could easily be created in other places. Multiple building sites can be found on gentle terrain near the road frontage. The soil map for the potential of the septic drain field looks favorable in this area. Powerline and phone/cable are present along the road. There are no public waterlines in the area. A home would require a well and septic. A few homes and one small business (Martin's Body Shop) are located on the road past this property and mostly out of view through the trees.
The land is all forested except for a woods road and a few small openings and trails. Soils are mostly loam or silty clay loam and are productive for timber and wildlife openings. About 30 acres of higher and gentler slopes are covered in loblolly pine, now 3 or 4 years old. These trees are healthy and growing fast. For much of the area now in young pine, soils are classed as useful farmland (USDA soil class for farmland of importance). These areas could be productive for larger openings and small pastures if desired.
Slopes become steeper in places as you move across the tract. Hardwood forests stand on about 25 acres of steeper slopes and low areas around the creek branches. These areas are dominated by yellow poplar, sweetgum, and American beech. White oaks and red oaks are also common. See the attached photos, aerial photo, topo map, and soil maps.
The town of York is about a 15-minute drive away and offers restaurants, doctors, churches, and several stores, including Tractor Supply, Lowes, and Food Lion Grocery. The tract is about 12 miles from York, 27 miles from Rock Hill, 41 miles from Spartanburg, 23 miles from Gastonia, NC, and 46 miles from Charlotte. All distances are approximate road miles to the center of town.
The road gets its name from one of several mines operated in the area in the 1800s. The landowner does not know the exact location of the old Martin mine and has found no indication that it was on this property. No old pits, holes, or berms have been observed.
The property does not have an address. GPS directions can be found for "Martins Gold Mine Road, Smyrna, SC 29743."
